During the winter of 1870-1871 a civil war veteran named Johathan Wesley Van Scoyoc and his wife Margaret completed their log cabin home. The cabin sat near the creek, in the valley, just north of what was to become Luray, Kansas. Today the Van Scoyoc log cabin has been restored and is displayed in the city park on the north side of town.
