Things To Do & See In North Central Kansas

A short drive of 38 miles along US highway 24 E and US highway 281 S from Alton, Kansas will take you to the town of Luray in Russell county.
Located on K-18 highway half way between Paradise and The Garden of Eden, on the edge of Luray, Kansas sits the VanScoyoc log cabin. The first log cabin built in Russell County.
During the winter of 1870-1871 a civil war veteran named Johathan Wesley Van Scoyoc and his wife Margaret completed their log cabin home. The cabin sat near the creek, in the valley, just north of what was to become Luray, Kansas. Today the Van Scoyoc log cabin has been restored and is displayed in the city park on the north side of town.
