Things To Do & See In North Central Kansas
This is a series of 12 posts featuring attractions, from natural wonders to man made oddities and just about everything in-between; all of which you can find in North Central Kansas.

Just over 30 miles from Alton, along US-24 E,  you will find the town of Cawker City, Kansas in Mitchell County.

Cawker City is the home of the World’s Largest Ball of Twine.

In 1953 Frank Stoeber started work on what was to become the World’s Largest Ball of Twine and in only 4 years the giant ball weighed 5,000 pounds and stood 8 feet high. In 1961 Stoeber donated the ball to Cawker City, Kansas.

Today many businesses in town display paintings, featuring the ball of twine, in their windows and a “twine stripe” painted on the sidewalks lead from the ball to the paintings making it easy for visitors to see them all. In August the town holds the Twine-A-Thon when additional twine is added by residents and visitors. The event also includes a horseshoe contest, car show, and food stands.

And don’t forget that its just a short drive away from Alton, Kansas where you’ll find The Craft Basket and one of the best holiday shopping experiences in the area!
